A number of factors. Before In the nineteen sixties the russians used A rocket design similar to design that space x has. It was called the n one. Unfortunately back in that time it wasn't able to lift off at all. Thul rocket was able to get to max q and go into space. What people keep forgetting is that the first stage it's supposed to be expendable. Even though the philosophy for space x is to be reusable, this was a test of its latest rocket design. It is now historic because it is now the most powerful rocket in the world. Known as the super heavy.
